The state was created in 1996 from part of Rivers State and it is one of the newly created states in Nigeria.
The states name ‘Bayelsa’ is an acronym of three former local government areas in the state – Brass, Sagbama, and Yenagoa
The state is a geographic location with an estuarine and riverine setting with over 60% of its communities surrounded by water.
In 1956, the first oil well in Nigeria was created in Olobiri, Bayelsa state making the state an Oil-rich state.
