Staff Motivation and Impact on Student Performance – Findings show that staff motivation to a very great extent affects the performance of students.

Teachers who are well paid (motivated) will definitely be more willing to teach their students.

Understanding Staff Motivation

Staff Motivation encourages the teacher to perform better. When you take care of the teacher, he will perform better; he will take his job seriously.

This therefore implies that teachers who are motivated will perform better than those that are not motivated.

This is therefore a pointer to the fact that staff motivation to a very great extent affects the performance of the students in school.

When a teacher teaches well, his or her students will easily comprehend what he is teaching. A teacher is supposed to teach his students to the extent that they fully comprehend what he has taught.

But the teacher who is not well motivated will believe that he is only wasting his time, and so, he ends up teaching for a few time and in most cases, he might not even attend classes to teach.

How does Staff Motivation affects Students Performance in Schools?

Thus, answering research questions which say: To what extent does staff motivation affect the performance of students in the University?

Well, facts and research in schools shows that staff motivation affects the performance of the students to a great extent.

Findings also show that the extent to which the staffs of the selected secondary schools or Polytechnics are motivated is minimal.

Findings further show that there are several factors that can hinder and improve the motivation of teachers in a secondary school.

These include lack of finance, level of recognition of the teacher’s ability, employment of untrained teachers, lack of satisfaction on the part of the teachers and many others.

When the school is not financially buoyant, it becomes difficult to give allowances to the workers and it is also difficult to increase the salaries of the work and when all these are not done, the teacher might not take his job seriously.

More-so, a teacher who is insatiable will never be motivated.

No matter what is done for such a teacher, he or she believes that nothing has been done.

Thus, he will not be easily motivated. A man or woman who cannot be satisfied can therefore not be motivated.

Management that does not know about motivation will not want to motivate their staff.

They may tend to believe that it is not necessary taking care of the welfare of the teachers and this may in turn affect student’s performance negatively because such teachers will not take their jobs seriously.

It was discovered likewise that the academic performance of the students in the selected secondary schools where teachers received less motivation were poor.

These indicate that the students perform below expectation and that the performance of the students is below average – Npower Registration.

Thus, since these items were answered in the affirmative, it therefore means that the performance of the students of the selected secondary school is very poor.

The study sets out to examine the impact of staff motivation on the academic performance of the students of some selected secondary schools in Jos north local government area who participate in WAEC and NECO.

The analysis is concerned with how teachers of the selected secondary schools are motivated and how it in turn affects their academic performance.

The researcher reviewed series of related literature in chapter two so as to find out what others have said about the subject matter under study.

Thus, a chronicle of extensive background literature that helped in putting the subject in a clearer perspective was provided.

The researcher among others reviewed concepts like motivation, teaching, theories of learning and types of learning.

The researcher used the survey method in chapter three and information was elicited from the respondents through the questionnaires that were distributed to one hundred (100) respondents in the selected secondary schools in Jos north local government area.

Samples were picked from population made up of teachers in the five selected secondary schools by using the purposive sampling technique.

The data gathered and analysed showed that the motivation of staff in the school affects the performance of students to a great extent.

Factors that hinder or improve the motivation of teachers

These factors among others include:

  • Lack of finance
  • Lack of satisfaction on the part of teachers etc.

Finally, findings further showed that the academic performance of the students of the selected secondary schools in poor.

Thus, on the basis of the analysed data in this study, the researcher concludes that the extent to which the staffs of the selected secondary schools are motivated is minimal and this has in turn had negative implications on the performance of the students academically.

Thus, the academic performance of the students is poor.

This is evident in the responses gotten from the questionnaire distributed to the sampled population.

Arising from the conclusion that the teachers of the selected secondary schools are not well motivated and which in turn leads to poor academic performance of the students.

The researcher makes the following recommendation which it is believed when applied would address the problem of poor academic performance of the students of the selected secondary schools.

The recommendations are as follows:

1. Government should formulate educational policies that will help the educational sector to improve significantly.

2. The government and individuals should adequately fund primary and secondary schools so that the schools can provide learning facilities which will motivate both the teachers and the students.

3. The management of secondary schools should endeavour to embark on research in order to understand the current sentiments of the teachers regarding the school.

4. Teachers should be constantly sent on training; they should attend conferences, seminars and workshops and the management of the schools should be ready to sponsor the teachers as this will motivate the teachers to take their responsibilities seriously.

Limitation of the Study on Staff Motivation

Every researcher is bound to face or go through some hurdles when conducting research.

Thus, this research work is not an exception.

The researcher therefore faced three problems.

They include time, material and finance.
